Assignment 5: Ideas Of Gender

2) "Ralph Lauren Big Pony Fragrance Collection For Women" 
In this advert, the central characters include a group of women and a group of men. The men 
are portrayed as rich and attractive, driving successful cars and  playing Polo. The women are 
portrayed as attractive as well. This makes the audience feel attractive and successful when 
they wear the perfume.

Assignment 4 : Film Genres

Genre

1.



In film theory, genre refers to the method based on similarities in the narrative elements from which films are constructed. Most theories of film genre are borrowed from literary genre criticism. As with genre in a literary context, there is a great deal of debate over how to define or categorise genres. Besides the basic distinction in genre between fiction and documentary film genres can be categorised in several ways.

Fictional films are usually categorised according to their setting, theme topic, mood, or format The setting is the  environment where the story and action takes place. The theme or topic refers to the issues or concepts that the film revolves around. The mood is the emotional tone of the film. Format refers to the way the film was shot   or the manner of presentation. An additional way of categorising film genres is by the target audience. Some film theorists argue that neither format nor target audience are film genres.

iconography is used within film studies to describe the visual language of cinema, particularly within the field of genre criticism. Iconography is an important aspect of genre. We expect to see certain objects on screen when we see a particular genre, for example, in a western, dusty, lonely roads etc.

 

Sub Genre
Many movies include sub-genres, for example 'horror' might include classic 'monster' movies such as Dracula.

Hybrid Genre

Hybrid  Genre, is when two already famous genres are formed together. An example of 'hybrid genre' is Cowboys VS Aliens; a film that combines the ideas of western cowboys and futuristic aliens. 

2. 300

This film (300), is placed under the genre of Action, but also has a few sub-genres including Fantasy and history.

This movie could be based under the sub-genre of Action Fantasy.

The movie is set in 480 B.C. in Thermopylae.

The iconography includes, Spartan Costumes, Ancient Weaponry and horses.

The mood is very Dark and gritty, at some points the film is very mysterious, because you do not know what is going to happen next.

The Expendables 2

This film is placed under the genre of Action. Like most films, it also contains sub genres.
The Expendables 2 is placed under the sub-genre of Thriller, but also contain a lot of comedy.
The movie is set in a few different modern day places, including a foreign village and an abandoned Russian army facility.

The Iconography contains a wide range of guns (most of which are real) and also a lot of modified vehicles, for example boats and planes.
The mood of the film is light-hearted which hints of dark, sad scenes. For example, through the film there are a lot of jokes about the characters and they make war and violence seem light-hearted. But in some scenes, for example, the scene where a soldier dies in a mission, the film also portrays the dark side of war.

Terminator Salvation

This film is also placed mainly under the genre of action, but also has sub-genres of Drama and Sci-Fi. The film is set in a future world after a Nuclear Holocaust where "Skynet" controls the world. The Iconography of the film contains a lot of futuristic weapons such as laser guns and futuristic transport. There are a lot of 'robot' costumes in the film both human sized and larger.

The general mood of the film is dark, and gritty. The director has used dark lighting for nearly every scene to make it more tense and to keep the mood as serious as possible.

Assignment 3: The Press - 1

This is the masthead from "the daily telegraph." In publishing, a masthead is the title of a newspaper or other periodical in the type style and treatment in which it appears on the front page or cover of the periodical.

 A banner which may look like a masthead, is not exactly the same. A banner tells the audience a little about the newspaper/magazine. A banner could also include a short story, or the logo of the newspaper. In this example it presents "Real News. Real Entertainment."

A Headline is used to portray a brief descrption of the story to draw in readers. in most Broadsheet newspapers, large headlines are only printed on the front page, but many tabloids print headlines inside the newspaper as well; to present the story in a short, but informative way.

A Subheading is used to describe the story more, but to still give a brief overview of the story. The heading is used to catch the reader's attention, with puns or emotional language, but a subheading gives a short overview of the most important part of the story.

A Byline is used to portray the name and information about the writer/publisher of the article. For example, on a newspaper at the top of the article, the publisher will print the writer's name to give them credit for the article. It can also be used to represent the reliabilty of the text, for example, if the article was about the liberal democrats, but the writer is a supporter of the conservatives, the information could be very biased.

A Jumpline  directs the reader to the rest of the story. "a line of type identifying the page on or from which a 

newspaper story is continued." For example "See page nine"

A Caption is the description about the photo in the article. It tells you a quick, brief description of what is happening in the photo. 

A Column, is used to divide articles from other articles. Usually there are 4 equally sized rectangles going down the page to separate the articles.

A Gutter, is the small space you see between two columns that are on two different pages... like the space left blank so that binding can be done. Gutter is also referred to the tiny space between two columns but its correct technical term is an alley.

A Rule is a printing term for a straight line; usually produced with a roll of burder tape.  

Copy, is the text used in a story. This makes up the bulk of the newspaper, usually put into columns, the text gives a deep analogy into the background of the story.

 Graphic, is an image used to portray a story. This gives the reader a more visual explanation of the story. The graphic usually appears with a caption below it, the caption desribes what the graphic shows, if the reader didn't understand it.
